St. Raphael is a Catholic church in Heidelberg’s Neuenheim district, built between 1903 and 1905 in a Neo-Romanesque style. Ludwig Maier shaped the three-aisled basilica after Italian and early Christian models. Yellowish brick, round-arched friezes, and a pyramid-roofed tower define the exterior, while a crucifixion group crowns the eastern facade.

Neuenheim’s growing Catholic community prompted the construction after the district joined Heidelberg in 1891. A family funded the dedication to the Archangel Raphael in memory of zoology professor Raphael Slidell von Erlanger, whose epitaph remains inside. War damage, liturgical reforms, and later renovations changed the interior, including the removal of most altars by Alfons Marmon in the late 1960s. Today, stained glass, mosaics, a lapis-lazuli blue ceiling, and Udo Körner’s 1995 collage Schrei und Wolke bring together several periods.

Look for the late-fifteenth-century Madonna in the left side apse and the eighteenth-century wayside-cross torso. The 2016 organ has 32 stops across two manuals and pedal, while five bells include a 1904 bell weighing about 1,050 kilograms.
