Sankt Anna stands in Heidelberg’s old town as a Catholic church with a former hospital wing. The church’s German name is St. Annakirche in Heidelberg. Builders created the single-nave complex between 1714 and 1717 as a hospital church dedicated to Saint Anne. Red sandstone gives the building its distinctive appearance. Four pilasters with Corinthian capitals frame the Baroque facade, which rises toward a curved pediment and roof turret. Windows and a clock later softened the pediment’s intended dome-like effect. The eastern side joins a long, three-storey hospital building, while the plain western side faces Nadlerstraße. A courtyard portal bears a beggar relief and the inscription Elende Herberg. Inside, late Baroque side altars honour Saint Anne and Saint Francis Xavier beside a main altar with a crucifix. Saint Roch and a praying angel accompany the crucifix above the tabernacle. Sankt Anna belongs to the Catholic parish of Heilig Geist and also serves Polish and Romanian Orthodox congregations. Tridentine Rite Masses also take place there. The former hospital served several Christian communities, became a municipal guesthouse, and houses a Protestant nursing home. The blue choir room adds a calm interior detail.
