The Krematorium stands on Heidelberg’s Bergfriedhof, a historic cemetery shaped by terraces, winding paths and varied trees. Architect Philipp Thomas designed the building in Heidelberg. Opened in 1891, the crematorium served Heidelberg and the wider southwest of Germany through its temple-like architecture. Light-coloured Keuper sandstone gives the exterior its material presence. The gable combines Doric columns, pilaster-like wall ends, sculptural details and an Eternal Flame above a ram-headed bowl. Two classical female figures flank the flame on the gable. Inside, columbaria line the entrance hall, while a small consecration room contains a starry blue dome and angel-head frieze. A phoenix rising from flames marks the building’s idea of rebirth. Terrazzo flooring carries a central Memento Mori motif, while winged hourglasses and radiant suns alternate across the lower frieze. Goethe’s inscription appears on the northern side of the building. The original building has been preserved, while a later extension accommodates modern cremation equipment. The surrounding cemetery landscape remains part of the setting.
