# St. Stephan

St. Stephan is a protected Catholic parish church in Hawangen, Bavaria, with origins in the fifteenth century. Its nave has four window bays, a flat ceiling, and segmented round-arch windows, while the recessed chancel has two bays, a vaulted five-eighths closure, and matching windows. A west tower rises above a saddle roof, with corner pilasters, trefoil friezes, and sound arcades across its upper three storeys.

Simpert Kraemer carried out a major restoration in 1722, followed by further work in 1955 and 1956. Inside, marbled-wood altars from 1730 to 1740 surround paintings of the Archangel Raphael, Saint Peter, and the Rosary Madonna. The church also holds a 1790 pulpit with the four Evangelists, pine pews from the same year, and a ceiling painting created by the Haugg brothers in 1920.

A medieval Mount of Olives stands between the nave and tower, while an early sixteenth-century crucifix preserves an older layer of the church’s history. Other details include a nineteenth-century baptismal font on an octagonal pillar and a Solnhofen-stone memorial plaque for those who fell between 1805 and 1815.
