St. Martin is an Evangelical Lutheran church in Hanover’s Anderten district, with architectural elements from several periods. Its origins reach back to the fifteenth century. The oldest surviving feature is a three-sided Gothic choir, giving the church its clearest medieval architectural marker. A chapel dedicated to Saint Martin appears in a 1534 document. Fire destroyed the chapel in 1661, while rebuilding and re-consecration followed two years later. The church received a new tower in 1884. Later work included a 1954 to 1955 expansion designed by Fritz Schäfer and Peter Hübotter from Hanover. St. Martin became an independent church in 1950. Inside, a 1970 altar uses structural concrete made with Anderter cement, while Siegfried Zimmermann created several bronze and metal works. Hans Matschinsk made the choir’s stained glass in 1960.
