The Niedersächsischer Landtag convenes in Hanover as Lower Saxony’s state parliament, inside the historic Leineschloss. Leineschloss once served as a royal residence for Hanover’s kings.

World War Two destroyed the palace, which workers rebuilt between 1957 and 1962. From 1947 to 1962, parliamentary sessions took place at Stadthalle Hannover. Across its history, the building has also housed a monastery, library, opera house, and barracks. Public debate around the millennium questioned whether a new plenary hall should replace the existing one. Between 2014 and 2017, workers thoroughly renovated the existing plenary hall after plans for a new one.

Inside, a representation hall recalls Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, who lived there for twelve years. One monument honours August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben outside. The other commemorates the Göttinger Sieben, dismissed and exiled in 1837 after protesting the repeal of a liberal constitution.
