The Neustädter Hof- und Stadtkirche St. Johannis stands in Hanover as one of Lower Saxony's oldest Protestant aisleless churches. This Lutheran parish church has a Baroque building designed for preaching. The present structure rose between 1666 and 1670, serving the Protestant court after a ducal conversion. Its history reaches back to a castle chapel of St Gall, first mentioned in 1241, and another chapel followed before 1388. The church became a Lutheran church in Hanover in 1533. World War II left only the exterior walls, and reconstruction followed from 1956 to 1958 in simpler form. Later interior renovation restored several Baroque features. The church houses a Spanish Baroque organ, unique in Germany, while the Kantorei St. Johannis performs music. The building also serves as a concert venue. Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and Field Marshal Carl August von Alten are buried at this church. Epitaphs and tombstones now stand along the exterior walls. The long hall, slightly narrower chancel, western organ gallery, and small side galleries define its interior. The church has wheelchair access for visitors.
