Markuskirche stands in Hannover’s List district as an Evangelical-Lutheran church with a broad nave and narrow side aisle. Its tower rises seventy metres. Gothic elements shape the tower, while exposed brickwork remains visible in the vaults beneath simpler postwar finishes.

Otto Lüer designed the building, whose construction began in 1902 and ended in 1906. Four hundred concrete piles anchor the tower in sandy ground. A southwest mosaic shows the risen Christ as ruler of the world and was completed in 1907. War damage destroyed the original Neo-Romanesque decoration, but restoration allowed the church to host the Lutheran World Federation assembly in 1952. Worship shares the space with exhibitions, concerts, and other cultural events, while Paul Ott’s organ serves both religious music and students from the nearby music and theatre school.

A light sculpture by Claudia Wissmann has illuminated the main entrance since 2015. Inside, the former seven-metre gilded altar survives as an altar table and crucifix.
