Johann Gerhard Helmcke stands in Hanover’s Georgengarten, commemorating the baker and grain merchant who protected Herrenhäuser Allee. The monument recalls his 1807 purchase of the avenue’s trees. French occupying forces planned to cut down 1,300 linden trees as punishment for unpaid contributions.

Helmcke paid 3,000 Reichstaler to preserve them. At that time, the trees already stood about 80 years old, linking his decision to Hanover’s older landscape. The avenue was replanted with imperial lindens after most trees were felled between 1972 and 1974.

The first monument appeared in 1928 and was destroyed during World War II. In 1950, sculptor Friedrich Adolf Sötebier created the portrait medallion mounted on its shell limestone column. Some original lindens from 1726 and 1727 still stand at Königsworther Platz.
