Georgenpalais stands in Georgengarten, Hanover, as a wheelchair-accessible palace within the Herrenhausen Gardens. Its rear stair landings carry two sandstone sphinxes, which add a striking sculptural detail to the building.

Architect Tänzel built the palace between 1780 and 1782 for Count Johann Ludwig von Wallmoden-Gimborn. Originally called Wallmodenschlösschen, it joined the royal gardens after King George III purchased the estate in 1817. From 1818, the building carried its present association with King George. The City of Hanover acquired the palace and garden in 1921, after which wartime air raids damaged the structure. The Wilhelm Busch Society took responsibility in 1949 and rebuilt the heavily damaged western wing.

The palace houses the Wilhelm Busch German Museum for Caricature and Drawing Art. Its two sandstone sphinxes wait beside the rear steps, linking the museum setting with the palace’s historic architecture.
