The Thomaskirche stands in Hamburg as a church where a surviving neo-Gothic tower meets a postwar octagonal hall. Small cross-shaped windows punctuate the steel-and-concrete walls.

Originally built between 1883 and 1885, the church served Hamburg’s growing working-class population in a neo-Gothic form. A 1943 bombing left only the outer walls and tower shaft. After the war, architect Otto Kindt replaced the former cross-shaped plan with an octagonal hall and copper-covered tent roof. His design follows the principles of the Wiesbaden Program.

The altar and speaker’s podium stand on a semicircular platform, while seating circles them so every place faces the centre. An organ inaugurated in 1967 stands behind the congregation. Above, a large ceiling painting shows angels, the eye of God, and a dove beneath the interior dome. Those three figures represent the Christian Trinity beneath the dome. The original tower, designed by Carl Heinrich Grassmann, now serves as a separate bell tower linked by a small passage. Restoration work has preserved its historic fabric.
