St. Johannis Eppendorf is an Evangelical Lutheran parish church in Hamburg’s Eppendorf district, serving as a central church for northern Hamburg. You find a medieval place of worship known for weddings and connected with many neighbouring churches.

The church first appears in records from 1267, while Eppendorf itself appears in a document from 1140. A fire destroyed the earlier building in 1314, but its stone round tower survived, with some scholars linking it to the Carolingian period. In 1400, the parish became part of the Cistercian convent at Harvestehude, whose influence extended across villages including Winterhude, Eimsbüttel, Ohlsdorf and Niendorf. Lutheran worship reached the parish after Hamburg’s Reformation, and “Herrn Frantz” became its first recorded evangelical pastor in 1561.

The parish once stretched from Dammtor to Ochsenzoll and counted around 480 tax-paying adults in the fourteenth century. Today, the surviving round tower remains the clearest architectural trace of that long history, although it can no longer be seen from outside.
