Sankt Nicolauskirche stands in Hamburg’s Alsterdorf district, beside Sengelmannstraße on the grounds of Evangelische Stiftung Alsterdorf. This Evangelical Lutheran church presents a neo-Gothic design by Gustav Otte. Built in 1889 during Pastor Heinrich Sengelmann’s lifetime, it remains one of the few historical buildings of the original Alsterdorfer Anstalten. Its proportions reach approximately 31 metres in length and 16.5 metres in width.

In 1938, Hopp and Jäger renovated the interior, renewing the organ and gallery and changing the side windows. The altar, pulpit, baptismal stand, and memorial also changed. The closed east wall carries a large crucifix mural painted by the then theological director after the altar window was removed. Twelve figures stand beneath the cross, with halos marking Mary, Luther, and the director, while the mural’s meaning remains contested since 1987.

Several attempts have sought to change how visible the mural is. Wheelchair access makes this historic church more accessible while its interior preserves an unresolved visual history.
