Hauptkirche St. Michaelis is a Lutheran church in Hamburg and one of the city’s five main churches. Its Baroque façade rises above the city with a 132-metre copper-covered spire visible from the River Elbe. The present structure was completed in 1786 after earlier buildings suffered destruction from lightning and fire.

Inside, a Latin-cross plan accommodates 2,500 seats and five organs, including a Steinmeyer instrument with 85 registers and 6,674 pipes. A marble pulpit shaped like a chalice stands at the centre, while the 20-metre marble altar presents scenes from the life of Jesus Christ. Below, the crypt holds more than 2,400 people, including composers Johann Mattheson and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, and served as a shelter during the Second World War.

Four large clock faces mark the tower, which is the largest clock tower in Germany. The church continues to host services and concerts, bringing worship and music into a landmark shaped by repeated rebuilding.
