The Elbphilharmonie stands in Hamburg’s HafenCity quarter, on the Grasbrook peninsula beside the Elbe River. Hamburg residents often call the concert hall Elphi.

Its glass crown rises from the historic Kaispeicher A warehouse, joining a wave-like form with older brickwork. The upper glass resembles a hoisted sail.

Herzog & de Meuron designed the building after an initiative by Alexander Gérard and Jana Marko. Glass, brick, and water define its setting.

The building forms part of HafenCity and contains concert venues, a hotel, apartments, restaurants, and the Plaza. The Plaza provides panoramic views of Hamburg.

The Great Concert Hall places the audience around performers in a vineyard-style arrangement. Yasuhisa Toyota shaped its acoustic design.

Microshaped drywall plates support the hall’s sound treatment, while a pipe organ adds another musical feature. Recital Hall hosts smaller performances, and Kaistudio supports educational activities.

The building opened with a concert by the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra. Music and architecture meet throughout Elphi.
