Schloss Friedrichsthal presents three Baroque wings curving around a quiet courtyard, recalling palace designs associated with Versailles. Its balanced form creates a clear architectural centre. Duke Friedrich II of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg commissioned the summer residence between 1708 and 1711 for retreat and celebration. Wolf Christoph Zorn von Plobsheim designed the palace for the ducal court. A formal Baroque garden once extended eastward with statues, water features and a grotto. Later buildings replaced the garden. Across the street, the orangerie preserves part of that atmosphere through citrus plants and geometric flowerbeds. Johann and Friedrich Weidner added new two-storey wings during the nineteenth century, shaping much of the palace’s present appearance. Karoline Amalie and Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha used the rooms as a summer retreat. Restored stucco ceilings preserve details from the building’s earlier period. The palace now houses a state technical school, where classrooms occupy rooms connected with ducal history. Original interiors and later additions show how Schloss Friedrichsthal changed its purpose while retaining its Baroque character.
