Petermann-Denkmal stands among green lawns on the slope above the Orangerie, beside the August-Petermann walking path. The stone memorial offers a quiet view near the Little Tea House, where you can pause among the park’s paths.

August Petermann earned recognition through precise maps and monthly reports about distant expeditions, with particular attention to the north polar regions. His work helped organise Germany’s first expeditions towards those icy lands and brought remote journeys closer to everyday readers. After his death in 1878, geography societies across Germany raised funds through an initiative by the Justus Perthes publishing house. Munich sculptor Max Hoene created the monument, which was unveiled in 1909 after nearly thirty years of effort.

Ten geographical places, including a lunar crater, carry Petermann’s name. Here, the solid stone beside the path recalls how a map could widen people’s view of the world.
