Friedrichskirche stands in Germany as a compact Baroque church with a symmetrical outline. Plastered rubble stone meets sandstone around the corners, windows, and doors. The ground plan forms a Greek cross, while quarter-circle niches soften each corner. A grey slate turret echoes the cross above the red tiled roof.

This building ranks as Thuringia’s oldest Baroque central-plan church and the town’s smallest church. A leper hospital and Saint Nicholas chapel occupied the site before 1715. Duke Friedrich II commissioned the replacement after surviving a serious illness, making gratitude part of its foundation story. Construction began in July 1715, and worship began there by December. Inside, reddish-brown brick covers the floor beneath simple galleries in all four arms. A Baroque pulpit gallery rises above the plain altar with Friedrich II’s name and crown. The present organ dates from 1976, adding a later layer to the interior. Outside, a wooden bell frame and Latin sandstone plaque preserve two distinctive details. Above the entrance, a Latin sandstone inscription records the foundation as an act of gratitude.
