Alte Sternwarte stands on the Seeberg as a former centre of astronomy and land surveying. Its hilltop setting supported work on stars and maps.

Duke Ernst II commissioned the observatory, while Franz Xaver von Zach guided its scientific and architectural development. Scholars came to observe, measure, and debate.

The observatory became known across Europe for instruments and research that connected celestial observation with precise surveying. A meridian stone still marks this history.
