Luitpolddenkmal stands at Prinzregentenplatz, on the northern edge of Füssen’s old town in Germany. The monument honours Prince Regent Luitpold and the Wittelsbach royal family. A larger-than-life bronze figure presents Luitpold in a civilian frock coat above a tall stone pedestal. Bronze medallions show Maximilian II and Ludwig II. Their portraits connect the monument with Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein, castles associated with Füssen’s Bavarian royal history. Alois Mayer, born in Füssen, designed the statue. The Hans Clement foundry in Munich cast the bronze, while local residents funded the memorial through donations. Its front inscription names Luitpold as Prince Regent of Bavaria. The rear inscription records gratitude from Füssen and the surrounding area, ending with the Roman numeral MDCCCCII. The monument’s unveiling formed part of a ceremony with speeches, worship, a parade and music. Its setting has changed around the statue. The former Hotel Bayerischer Hof later housed the town hall and a secondary school. The site became the Luitpoldpark complex, with a hotel, shops, apartments and underground parking. The roundabout now carries several streets around this historical monument.
