Ehemaliges Kloster St. Mang in Füssen preserves the story of a Benedictine monastery founded in the ninth century. Saint Mang gives this historic site its name.

The former abbey grew beside the Lech, on a medieval route crossing the Alps towards Upper Italy. Its location carried strategic importance for Augsburg.

Between 1696 and 1726, a symmetrical Baroque complex rose under Abbot Gerhard Oberleitner and architect Johann Jakob Herkomer. Herkomer reshaped irregular medieval buildings into a Baroque ensemble.

The former basilica became a Venetian-inspired church, with frescoes presenting the legend of the local saint. Several named artists enriched the church interior with Baroque decoration.

The abbey dissolved during secularization in the early nineteenth century. The south wing houses the Füssen Town Museum, with exhibitions on the abbey, town history, and instrument making.

The north wing serves as Füssen town hall. Baroque reception rooms connect the museum displays with the former abbey’s architectural history.

The former monastery is wheelchair accessible to visitors.
