# St. Michael

St. Michael is a Lutheran parish church in Fürth, Bavaria, whose origins reach back to the twelfth century. The church is dedicated to Michael the Archangel.

Its oldest section, the Langhaus, dates from around 1100, while the tower arrived in the late fourteenth century. That sandstone tower provided refuge during wartime.

The choir followed around 1480, and an octagonal tower top appeared around 1530, giving the building several medieval layers. Fürth’s Reformation changed St. Michael into a Protestant church.

Inside, seventeenth-century Baroque remodelling added U-shaped balconies, while nineteenth-century work later introduced a neo-Gothic appearance. Adam Kraft’s sandstone sacrament housing preserves a Gothic detail.

Stained-glass windows made between 1958 and 1969 show Michael, the Red Sea crossing, Jesus’s baptism, and Christ as Judge. The main organ dates from 1979 and has forty-five stops.

It combines a 1904 Gothic Revival front with three manuals and a pedal, linking twentieth-century music to older architectural forms. Frieda Fronmüller served here as church musician.

St. Michael remains a historical and architectural landmark in Fürth, shaped by religious change and repeated reconstruction.
