Martinstor rises on Kaiser-Joseph-Straße in Freiburg im Breisgau, forming the older of the city’s two surviving medieval gates. Its origins reach the early thirteenth century. The arch stands within streets lined with cafés, bars, and shops, where medieval architecture meets Freiburg’s everyday city life.

The earliest recorded mention dates to 1238, under the name Porta Sancti Martini. Built into the fortifications, the gate later served as a prison, while a seventeenth-century image depicted Martin of Tours. Carl Schäfer led its enlargement in 1901. The structure grew from 22 metres to 60 metres and gained a fifteenth-century-style roof for Freiburg’s expanding tram system.

A plaque recalls three executions for witchcraft in 1599. Their names, Marghareta Mößmer, Catharina Stadelmann, and Anna Wolffart, remain inscribed beside the arch. A McDonald’s entrance occupies the western side. Wheelchair accessibility adds a practical detail to this historic passage through the city centre.
