Freischwimmer is a sculpture at the University Medical Center Freiburg, surrounding the West-Magistrale bridge between old and new hospital buildings. Gregor Passens created the steel form as an oversized lifebuoy, eight metres across. Its bright red cross immediately connects the artwork with medical aid and rescue. The bridge passes through its centre.

From the hospital courtyards and connecting walkways, you can see the structure as a clear orientation point. An angle of eighteen plus eight degrees gives the circular form a sense of movement. Walking through it changes the shape and your perspective, while the nearby emergency department and rooftop helipad reinforce its rescue theme. The red cross remains the detail that fixes this immense steel lifebuoy in the medical campus.
