Villa Metzler stands beside the Main in Sachsenhausen, Frankfurt, as a classicist residence with a hipped roof and mansards. Its three-storey façade preserves a rare example of Frankfurt classicism.

Peter Salzwedel, an apothecary devoted to botany, once surrounded the property with ginkgo, Canadian red oak, and tulip trees. Goethe praised the celebrated garden. Built between 1802 and 1804, the house later gained baroque mansards and a belvedere under Georg Friedrich Metzler. An English-style rose garden replaced Salzwedel’s botanical landscape. King Wilhelm I and Otto von Bismarck attended gatherings there, while physician Johann Friedrich Moritz Schmidt-Metzler later lived inside with Mathilde Friederike Metzler.

The property survived the air raids of the Second World War and served as the Haus Daheim old people’s home. Frankfurt acquired it in 1961, bringing the building into the Museum Angewandte Kunst. Its belvedere still crowns the roof, while the Main and Sachsenhausen place this historic house within Frankfurt’s cultural landscape.
