Sankt Bartholomäus, also known as Frankfurt Cathedral, is a Gothic church in central Frankfurt, Germany. The church is dedicated to Saint Bartholomew.

Earlier churches occupied this site, with the earliest known building dating from the sixth century. Its recorded history reaches back to the Merovingian period.

The cathedral played a major role in the Holy Roman Empire, hosting imperial elections and coronations within its walls. Imperial coronations took place inside the cathedral. Although it was never a bishop’s seat, its political importance earned it the title of imperial cathedral.

Bombing during World War II severely damaged the building, which was later reconstructed. The cathedral’s interior was completely burned out. Its ninety-five-metre spire gives the building a distinct vertical profile.

A staircase of 324 steps leads through the tower towards panoramic views across Frankfurt. The cathedral museum preserves fabrics, paintings, gold jewellery, and other treasures. The building also became a symbol of national unity during the nineteenth century.
