Römer stands in Frankfurt am Main’s Altstadt, opposite Old St Nicholas Church and on Römerberg plaza. This medieval town hall has served Frankfurt for more than six centuries. Its three-peaked façade combines medieval elements with a neogothic redesign dating from the late nineteenth century.

Frankfurt’s council bought the property from the Römer merchant family in 1405, together with the Goldener Schwan. Later expansions added connected houses over several centuries. The façade presents four Holy Roman emperors, Frederick Barbarossa, Louis the Bavarian, Charles IV, and Maximilian II. A balcony on the façade serves public events.

Inside, Römerhalle and Schwanenhalle rank among the oldest rooms, once associated with Frankfurt’s book fairs and goldsmiths’ markets. The Kaisersaal contains portraits of Holy Roman emperors. Bombing during the Second World War largely destroyed the complex, which was rebuilt and re-inaugurated in 1955. The site is wheelchair accessible and houses Frankfurt’s civil registration office.
