Palais Thurn und Taxis stands in Frankfurt as an architectural site shaped by imperial administration, political meetings, war damage and reconstruction. Robert de Cotte designed the original palace in Frankfurt. It began as the administrative seat of the imperial post office, operated by the Thurn und Taxis family. Prince Anselm Franz von Thurn und Taxis commissioned the building. From 1805 to 1813, Karl Theodor von Dalberg used the palace as his residence. Later, the Bundestag of the German Confederation met there. Those meetings took place from 1816 to 1848 and again from 1851 to 1866, chaired by Austria’s envoy. The public could not attend those meetings. After bombing in 1943 and 1944, the damaged palace was demolished in 1951. Some original ceiling paintings and stucco survived. Modern reinforced concrete and original sections shaped the later reconstruction, which omitted the mansard roofs. From 2004 to 2010, Palais Quartier incorporated the reconstructed building. The reconstructed palace houses various shops, joining historical forms with a modern urban use.
