In Frankfurt’s judicial district, Nur die Spitze des Eisbergs (Fritz-Bauer-Denkmal) marks the pavement before the Higher Regional Court. Artist Tamara Grcic created this stone memorial in Frankfurt. An unhewn stone rises from the paving, while another portion remains hidden underground like an iceberg’s unseen mass. Two bronze plaques accompany the stone in the pavement.

The memorial recalls Fritz Bauer, Hessian attorney general and a leading figure in Germany’s legal reckoning with the Holocaust. He helped rehabilitate participants in the July twentieth assassination attempt against Hitler. Bauer also initiated Adolf Eichmann’s arrest and brought investigations into the Auschwitz complex together in Frankfurt. The Frankfurt Auschwitz Trials later prosecuted members of the camp’s SS guard units. The buried stone points toward the many perpetrators who escaped justice. Its visible surface leaves the deepest part beneath your feet.
