The Leunabunker is an architectural landmark in Frankfurt, connecting a 1930s protective shelter with music rehearsal and contemporary graffiti. Its first purpose was sheltering workers from the nearby Farbwerke Hoechst. That company belonged to the I.G. Farben conglomerate, placing the bunker within Frankfurt’s industrial history and air-raid infrastructure. The interior changed function in the mid-1970s. It became rehearsal space for musicians, giving the former shelter a setting for practice, creativity, and artistic expression. The new rooms provided rehearsal space for musicians. Large-scale graffiti covers the exterior, using related tones that reinforce the presence of each individual artwork. Helge Steinmann, known as Bomber, led the project. He worked with Shok1, Mick La Rock, and ECB on a facade supported by the city of Frankfurt. Leunabunker brings shelter history and urban art together. The building’s changing use links employee protection, musician rehearsal, and graffiti art across Frankfurt’s industrial and cultural history. Its facade carries that layered history in paint.
