Lessing-Denkmal stands in Frankfurt’s Obermainanlage, honouring the writer and philosopher Gotthold Ephraim Lessing. The marble and porphyry sculpture gives this historical setting a durable, clearly visible landmark. Wheelchair access makes the site easier to experience.

Gustav Kaupert created the monument in 1882 for Herz Hayum Goldschmidt, who left funds for it in his will. The commission commemorates Lessing’s advocacy of religious tolerance. His play Nathan the Wise explored understanding between different religious communities. The sculpture first stood outside Frankfurt’s old city library, among monuments to local poets and thinkers.

Frankfurt moved the work to Obermainanlage in September 1961. Nathan the Wise had been banned in Frankfurt in 1779, making the monument’s message especially striking.
