Kaiserpfalz Franconofurd is an archaeological site in Frankfurt, directly beneath the Stadthaus am Markt. Part of the Archaeological Museum Frankfurt, it preserves the city’s oldest surviving building remains. Under the modern building, the Domhügel holds Roman settlement remains beside royal and imperial structures.

The preserved layers follow roughly two thousand years, from Roman baths and a Merovingian royal court to a Carolingian-Ottonian imperial palace and late medieval cellars. Franconofurd comes from the earliest documented mention of Frankfurt. Charlemagne’s document of 794 recorded that mention and probably originated in a predecessor building. These remains connect the city’s earliest record with its later palace complex.

Excavations between 2012 and 2014 provided evidence for a bronze model depicting the palace around 860 at one-to-ninety scale. Large 3-D graphics reconstruct a Roman road station around 150. Construction in 2012 covered the archaeological garden and integrated it into the new building. Beneath Frankfurt’s modern streets, Roman baths meet the walls of a Carolingian royal court.
