Inverted Collar and Tie stands before Frankfurt’s Westend Tower as a sculpture by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen. Oldenburg and van Bruggen created it in 1994. Its upside-down collar and tie rise from a pedestal, giving the work an instantly recognisable outline.

Frankfurt’s DG Bank commissioned the work in 1993. It was crafted in California for its Frankfurt setting beside the city’s banking district and Westend Tower. Its broad supporting pedestal is painted dark grey. A light-grey tie with dark stripes creates contrast against the darker base and nearby Westend Tower.

Polymer concrete, steel and glass-reinforced plastic form the recorded structure. At roughly twelve metres by eight metres by four metres, the sculpture occupies a substantial three-dimensional footprint. It weighs seven and a half metric tons. Its upward sweep turns office dress into an ironic symbol within Frankfurt’s banking landscape. The recorded spot remains accessible for wheelchair users.
