The Gesellschaftshaus stands within Frankfurt’s Palmengarten as a historic building where architecture meets a botanical setting. Friedrich Kayser designed the building, which opened in 1871.

Its unusual composition joins a palm house of steel and glass with a representative stone building inspired by terminal railway stations. The transparent hall drew inspiration from the Paris World Fair.

At the centre, a decorative ballroom opens towards a surrounding gallery and adjoining banqueting rooms, creating the building’s architectural focus. Fire destroyed the building seven years after its inauguration, and reconstruction followed one year later.

Ludwig Neher redesigned the interior, while Martin Elsaesser and Ernst May remodelled the south wing in a modernist style in 1928. The west wing received a replacement after wartime damage.

A restoration completed in 2012 recovered the ballroom’s late nineteenth-century appearance, original room structure, skylight, windows, and reconstructed chandeliers. The building contains a foyer, restaurant, lecture theatre, conference rooms, and spaces for private functions.
