Friedberger Warte stands on the Eulenberg at Bornheim’s northwestern edge in Frankfurt, marking the district’s highest point. Its slender late Gothic tower carries a slate-covered roof. A rectangular defensive courtyard, measuring 22 by 28 metres, surrounds the structure with a western guardhouse. The guardhouse includes a kitchen and a well room.

The present tower rose in 1478, replacing an earlier watchtower mentioned in 1350. It formed part of the four-tower Frankfurter Landwehr, built as a defensive line in the fourteenth century. Frankfurt’s citizens repelled imperial troops here during the Schmalkaldic War in 1546. Croatian troops burned the tower and courtyard in 1634, and rebuilding began in 1637. Later uses included a customs station and fire watch, while an apple wine tavern has occupied the site since 1815.

Since 1885, the tower has also served as a ventilation shaft for Frankfurt’s sewer system. Tram construction in 2011 and 2012 eased the former traffic bottleneck between central Frankfurt and the A661. Completed in summer 2017, the surrounding space now accommodates markets and events. From the south, Friedberger Landstraße now runs only left of the tower, making the area more accessible to pedestrians.
