Ein Haus für Goethe stands in Frankfurt’s Taunusanlage, the park stretching from the Taunus Gate to the Old Opera. Eduardo Chillida created this sculpture in nineteen eighty-six. It forms a semi-enclosed space through flat surfaces and geometric openings, remaining open at the front and top. The surrounding park contains hills, monuments, and other artworks.

Chillida made it from concrete mixed with colour powder and oxidising copper shavings, producing its grey-brown hue. Roughly assembled wooden formwork shaped the textured surface. The three-by-six-by-eight-metre structure belongs to a series honouring artists, scientists, and philosophers. A single arch joins two of its surfaces. Chillida studied architecture before pursuing art, which informed his attention to boundaries and spatial form. His approach defines the form through spatial boundaries.

That opening recalls a Romanesque church apse and gives the form a bridge between space and time. Chillida first used art concrete in 1974 for Lugar de Encuentros V in Toledo. The open design invites public engagement with Goethe and his works. Its open top leaves Goethe’s house without a roof, keeping the sought light above the space.
