Dr. Carl Kahn marks a history spot in Frankfurt, connecting Nied with the life of a Jewish physician. The physician Dr. Kahn moved to Nied in 1904. Born in Ranstand, Hesse, in 1878, he practised medicine in Alt Nied and joined local community associations. He also served as a sports doctor in Nied.

During the First World War, Kahn volunteered for service and received the Iron Cross, First Class, for his contributions. The Iron Cross First Class marked his wartime service. From 1933, Nazi persecution restricted Jewish professionals, forcing Kahn’s family to abandon their practice by 1937. Kahn continued treating Jewish patients under special permits.

In 1938, attackers targeted the family home, and authorities arrested Kahn and took him to Buchenwald. Authorities released Dr. Kahn later that month. Dr. Carl Kahn and Jenny died by suicide in 1942 amid continuing persecution. Both are buried at the Jewish Cemetery in Eckenheim. Their names also appear on Nied’s memorial for victims of fascism, while Stolpersteine mark Oeserstraße 54. The square before the cemetery was named in their honour in 1992.
