Der Karpfen stands in Frankfurt-Höchst as a residential building with roots in a Gothic half-timbered inn from around 1500. Its setting includes half-timbered houses from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, linking the building to Höchst’s architectural heritage.

The inn served travellers near the Main and market ships from Frankfurt and Mainz. Albrecht Dürer visited in 1520, Mozart travelled there with his father and sister in 1763, and Goethe drew nearby Höchst Castle from this viewpoint. War damage led to a rebuilding in 1633, while later renovations adapted the premises for guests. Structural problems brought demolition and reconstruction in 1973, using iron and concrete.

A large slate carp on the upper floor preserves the building’s clearest visual connection with its former inn.
