Der Hafenarbeiter stands at the southern head of Friedensbrücke in Frankfurt am Main, near the former Westhafen. Constantin Meunier created the bronze sculpture in 1890, showing a stevedore in work clothes and a contraposto stance.

The figure rises slightly above life size, reaching about two metres, while its hood protects the neck from coal dust and rubbing. Leo Gans acquired the work, which has stood here since 1910. Bridge construction moved it to the Städel Art Institute between 1950 and 1955, before it returned to the bridge.

The hood recalls the heavy jute bags once carried through Frankfurt’s port. The sculpture belongs to the Route of Industrial Culture Rhine-Main and to Meunier’s series of working-class figures shown in cities including Antwerp, Stockholm, Dresden, Copenhagen and Lima.
