Zitadelle Petersberg rises on Petersberg hill in Erfurt, central Germany, as a large Baroque fortress surrounded by more than two kilometres of stone walls. The 36-hectare complex offers underground passageways, historic buildings and broad defensive structures to explore.

Construction began in 1665 under Johann Philipp von Schönborn, Elector of Mainz, over the remains of a medieval Benedictine monastery. Peterskirche, whose origins reach back to the 12th century, is the oldest surviving building, while later phases strengthened the fortress between 1707 and 1728. Napoleon’s forces occupied the site from 1806 to 1814, and Prussian engineers continued its development until 1868. Military use ended in 1963, and restoration after German reunification in 1990 opened the historic grounds to the public.

The underground maze includes a hidden trench once linking Petersberg with Cyriaksburg Citadel. A fortress bakery dating from 1832 has also returned to operation, giving the stone stronghold a working detail from its military past.
