Villa Festge stands in Erfurt’s southwestern district, below the Cyriaksburg Citadel and above a spacious park sloping towards the street. Built in 1899, the historicist villa resembles a castle more than a private residence, with staircases, balconies, rich ornament and a dome-like tower.

Karl Festge, an entrepreneur and court photographer, commissioned this display of bourgeois wealth during Erfurt’s rapid expansion. His businesses included brick manufacturing and real estate, while the facade’s imagery recalls his biography with a camera among its details. Cyriak Street ranked among the city’s most expensive addresses, and the villa reflected the confidence of the wealthy families who settled in Erfurt’s scenic southwest.

Festge died in 1909, and lamp manufacturer Stübgen took over the property in 1912. Soviet occupiers expropriated it in 1946, after which it also hosted dignitaries. Today, the building houses the Panse Gallery and a design agency.
