Stadtmuseum Erfurt occupies the historic Haus zum Stockfisch in Erfurt, where the city’s past unfolds through objects, documents, maps and multimedia displays. The permanent exhibition carries you from medieval Erfurt, shaped by Luther and its university, towards the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Grand ground-floor halls preserve relics from the old town hall, including valuable council silver and university insignia with ornate sceptres. Church treasures present Erfurt as a sacred community, while Reformation-era objects trace the upheavals of the sixteenth century. Upper floors examine later urban life, and exhibitions explore city planning, social change and questions from Erfurt’s history.

A film combines aerial footage with computer animation to show the city from above. Beyond the main building, the museum’s historical setting extends to the Neue Mühle, Bartholomäusturm and Luftschutzkeller Erfurt.
