Rathaus Erfurt stands at Fischmarkt in Erfurt as a Neo-Gothic landmark whose main structure dates from the 1870s. Its political roots reach back to the eleventh century, with the first written mention appearing in 1275. From the thirteenth to the seventeenth century, the building served as the centre of Erfurt’s self-government.

The present structure followed the demolition of the old Gothic town hall in 1830, after minor roof damage prompted its replacement. Architect Theodor Sommer began construction in 1869, the first offices moved in during 1875, and the official inauguration took place on 2 June 1882. Inside, Johann Mannhardt’s precision clockwork occupies the tower, while Johann Peter Theodor Janssen’s grand hall murals portray Erfurt’s history and Martin Luther’s life. Public staircases display Eduard Kaempffer’s paintings from 1889 to 1896, showing local legends and historical scenes.

Bronze figures of Boniface and Martin Luther replaced statues of Frederick I and Wilhelm I in 2017. Damage from the Second World War led to restoration and simplified architectural details.
