Predigerkirche stands in the heart of Erfurt’s old town, beside the Gera River. Its elongated Gothic nave and cross-ribbed vaults lead your eye towards a choir shaped by medieval craftsmanship.

Dominican friars began the complex in the early thirteenth century, and the first convent buildings received consecration in 1230. The present choir followed late in that century, while fourteenth-century alterations changed the church’s form. A bell tower rose between 1447 and 1488, before the Reformation brought Lutheran worship. Later, the building served as a prisoner-of-war camp in the early nineteenth century, and workers repaired the resulting damage. Gatherings during the Peaceful Revolution of 1989–90 added a modern chapter to its history.

Inside, a wooden choir from around 1280 stands alongside a Gothic winged altar dating from about 1492. A major organ, first installed in the sixteenth century and later rebuilt, completes the interior’s distinctive character.
