Obere Kaserne stands within the Defensionskaserne on Petersberg, overlooking Erfurt’s historic city landscape. Its massive Prussian classical façade presents three round-arched portals and broad sandstone pilasters.

Built between 1828 and 1831, the complex served as an artillery position within the fortress. Walls more than two metres thick and basement loopholes reveal its defensive purpose. Thick cross walls divided the interior into sections, while palisades could isolate areas after an enemy breach. Petersberg first held a Benedictine monastery for more than five centuries before becoming a military fortress during the Thirty Years’ War.

Today, the historic structure is becoming a campus for creative industries and culture. Around 10,000 square metres will combine preserved architecture with meeting spaces and high-speed internet. The central portal rises beneath a projecting section framed by four colossal pilasters.
