Karl Klaar is remembered in Erfurt by a Stolperstein at Trommsdorffstraße 5, marking his last home and business. The brass plaque connects one address with a Jewish life destroyed under Nazi persecution. Born in Lengsfeld on 10 July 1890, he became co-owner of the Erfurter Tapisserie Manufaktur Klaar und Schloss. The textile business was classified as non-Aryan in 1935 and forcibly taken from him in 1936.

After his health deteriorated, psychiatric institutions became part of his persecution under the Nazi regime. Bernburg euthanasia centre became the place where he was murdered on 28 November 1940. The memorial also recalls the T4 programme, which killed people whom the Nazis deemed unfit. As Erfurt’s first Stolperstein, it places his fate directly into the city’s streets and historical landscape.
