Herrmannsplatz is a historic square in Erfurt, centred on the Herrmann Fountain and its octagonal water basin. Georg Kugel shaped the monument as a slender column resembling a Gothic ornamental turret. Its form echoes the towers of the nearby cathedral and recalls Erfurt’s medieval flourishing. The inscription honours Karl Herrmann as a loyal friend of his birthplace.

The square was once known as Roßmarkt and took its present name after the fountain’s inauguration in 1876. Karl Herrmann was a merchant, historian and city councillor who helped connect Erfurt to the railway network in 1847. He also supported urban planning and the Erfurt Union Parliament, where the young Otto von Bismarck took part in 1850. His collection of historical sources helped establish modern urban historical research in Erfurt. At the centre, the fountain’s tower-like column rises from the eight-sided basin, bringing the city’s medieval past into view.
