The Cathedral of Santa Maria of Ibiza stands at the highest point inside Dalt Vila, the fortified old town of Ibiza. The church rises above the sea and port. Built on the site of the former mosque Yebisah, the cathedral preserves a history reaching back to the thirteenth century. Catalan Gothic shapes its oldest sections. A Gothic five-storey bell tower contrasts with the Baroque nave, while fourteen side chapels line the single-nave interior. The façade sits beside the altar axis. Strong buttresses give the exterior a sober profile, while the interior holds Gothic panels, a silver-gilt monstrance, paintings, and later devotional works. Restored bells occupy the tower’s third floor. In 1782, Pope Pius VI established Ibiza’s episcopal seat, and the church became a cathedral. The Diocesan Museum of Santa Maria d’Eivissa i Formentera occupies the sacristy and chapterhouse. Its collection includes religious books and traditional Ibizan jewellery. A chapel of the Blessed Sacrament provides a place for silence and personal prayer. The cathedral overlooks the sea, port, Playa d’en Bossa, and Formentera. Dalt Vila’s cobbled streets lead towards Ibiza Castle, Santo Domingo Convent, and the old city walls.
