Baluard de Sant Bernat rises at the western end of Eivissa’s coastal fortifications, within the UNESCO-listed quarter of Dalt Vila. The sixteenth-century stone bastion overlooks the Mediterranean Sea and the old town from the ancient walls. Its position formed part of a defensive response to pirate raids and foreign invasions.

Seven interconnected bastions encircle the old town, with pathways linking Sant Bernat to Sant Jordi, Sant Jaume and Castell de Eivissa. Exhibits inside present military uniforms, armour and artillery from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, while interactive displays let you lift cannonballs and handle replica swords. Together, the displays trace changes in military strategy across roughly three centuries.

Whitewashed buildings and winding cobbled streets surround the fortifications, adding another layer to the view across Eivissa. Look for the artillery pieces and the heavy stonework, which connect this high coastal position with the city’s long military history.
