Wohn- und Atelierhaus Wach stands in Düsseldorf as a protected monument and a striking example of early modern residential architecture. Karl Wach designed the house between 1931 and 1933. Its street facade combines exposed rough concrete, horizontal windows, and an asymmetrical arrangement of cubes and planes. Small openings and barred ground-floor windows give the front a closed, graphic appearance.

The two-storey front house connects with a single-storey rear structure beneath a sloping shed roof. A broad first-floor window band crosses the facade, while two narrow rows mark the ground floor. Above the off-centre entrance, round windows form a line of portholes inspired by shipbuilding and ocean liners. The facade follows proportions associated with Le Corbusier, including a layout based on the golden ratio.

Inside, generous windows turn the living areas towards a courtyard arranged on three sides. Folding walls could separate or combine the rooms into one open area spanning almost the entire building footprint. The courtyard’s large, nearly floor-to-ceiling round window once belonged to the dining room. Beyond it, an atrium garden faced a swimming pool with a sculpture.
